Post Film Screenings - the return of?

Hello all,

I've done a bit of internet surfing and found some interesting films which could be worth screening to our fellow Worcester citizens, however i realize that we need a permit to show them. So I found 2 websites, one based in America, the other in UK (through the Co-Operative)which will sell you a DVD as well as rights to show the film once in public.

Here are my suggestions; might anyone else be interested in starting these up again? From what i remember they were quite popular last year, and I should imagine we're on good terms with the Worcester Arts Workshop, the University Film Society and/or The Swan Theatre so maybe they would have us back again?

http://www.diydogwoof.com - £50-100 for DVD and viewing rights
http://www.greenplanetfilms.org $45-$105 for DVD and film rights plus £15.95 international shipping for up to 4 DVDs

My suggestions:
1) The Economics of Happiness
http://theeconomicsofhappiness.org
2)A Simple Question: The Story of STRAW (short film)
http://www.asimplequestion.org
3) Vanishing of the Bees
http://vanishingbees.co.uk
4) Black Gold
http://www.blackgoldmovie.com
5) Into Eternity
http://www.intoeternitythemovie.com
6) The Cost of Cool

Hey Sarah, I've noticed that the links didn't work in this post, so I've fixed them for you. Remember you need to add the FULL URL which includes the http:// prefix part for it to link properly.

Hey,

Thanks for correcting the links Andy. I can't make the DIY Dog Woof one work though? Is it actually http://www.dogwoof.com/tag/diy/
Also, Good Screenings (http://www.goodscreenings.org/) is another one. They are still building up their portfolio but have a focus on environmental films. Quick checks on the cost seem to come out around £80 for a screening in the University or the Guildhall, free entry with donations only. I think it'd be great to get some film showings going again!

Thanks Andy, much appreciated! I'll remember the advice for next time.

I will look into the film screening possibilities once I've sorted out the AGM and Energy Group stuff coming up this week.

I'll be in touch!

Here's some I looked into last year when planning some similar movie showings...and they are all licence free.
An Inconvenient truth http://www.climatecrisis.net
End of Suburbia http://www.endofsuburbia.com
Escape from Suburbia http://www.escapefromsuburbia.com
Crude Impact http://www.crudeimpact.com
The Power of Community http://www.powerofcommunity.org

Thanks Justin, this is a helpful list. I remember that Sarah planned a screening of the End of Suburbia before she left last year but this never happened? Which of the others have also not been shown before by us? Peak Oil imposed by Nature doesn't ring a bell to me...

We showed End of Suburbia and The Power of Community at the university last year, and before that we showed Age of Stupid at the tech.

Actually we continuously found the format of these events tricky. They tend to be so long that no-one has any attention left to discuss anything or participate at the end, unless there was a concerted effort to invite such activity at the beginning. Also, the venues being lecture theatres only lend themselves to a Q&A bit for a few minutes at the end - with an "audience" asking an "expert" tricky questions.
Pete Robinson from Greenpeace started with a similar idea but showing 5-15 minute films and we found the feedback and participation was much easier this way.
We could either screen a "medley" of existing short movies, or take extracts and show them. (I'm putting together some ideas for the roadshow already)

Hey Justin, Any updates on this? It'd be great to do a couple of film showings in the latter half of this year, as we may attract new members, who might not have otherwise thought about TW as a group to associate with.

Hi, just to put my two-pence in - someone asked us on facebook earlier in the week whether we had any plans to screen Planeat, a new film encouraging people to break with their current affection for meat and dairy products. Find out more on their website - http://planeat.tv/the-film.
I've enquired about licence costs - the rates are:
Up to 25 people £50
Up to 50 people £100
Up to 100 people £200

You can charge for entry, so for example they suggest charging £2 per person, in that way you should get your money back...

The licence fee exists because the film has been self-financed, and the money will go towards marketing the film.
